winter sports

Lots of students who come to Montreal to study English or French are usually from "hot" countries, like Mexico, Colombia or Brazil. So, they suffer a lot with the Canadian cold. But the same cold that sometimes makes them sick, can also give them the chance of getting in touch with the amazing winter sports.

Hockey, ski, snowboarding and skating are examples of a kind of sport that does not exist in Brazil. Trying theses sports is always a nice experience, even if are not very successful...

Yesterday I tried skating. I went to an ice ring at the Atrium Le 1000 with some friends from Brazil and Mexico. It was really nice to see all those people sliding on the ice and I couldn't wait for the chance of trying. But when I put the skates on I realized that it could be harder than I expected. And it really was!!! I have to confess: after 2 hours of no sliding, I had to give up because my ankles were hurting.

Nevertheless it was a funny experience which I will always remember.

Le Biodôme

Montreal is an amazing city, with lots of entertainment options; pubs, clubs, good restaurants, museums and old churchs. A good option to spend a couple of hours is a different kind of zoo called Biodôme. There you can find five ecosystems of the Americas. So, you can see many kinds of animals, like the penguins from the Sub-Antarctic Islands or the terrible anaconda, from the Tropical Rainforest. It's really funny and educational!

Post, traditional recipe

Mexico is a country full of history; therefore as a Mexicans, we have a lot of typical dishes, costumes and traditions, etc…
Mexican food has a lot of variety, from sweet desserts to hot and spicy meals. One of my favorite meals is enchiladas. It's a really easy dish and inexpensive. The ingredients that you need to prepare this delicious dish are: tortilla corn, crushed tomatoes, cheese, oil, salt, pepper and an onion.
And the procedure is even easier:
1.       First you fry the tortilla in the oil.
2.       Then you season the crushed tomatoes with the salt, peppers and the onion.
3.       Then you take the tortilla and soak it into the seasoned crushed tomatoes.
4.       Take the tortilla out from the tomatoes and you add cheese inside, like a burrito.
5.       Finally you put the enchilada in a dish and put some of the crushed tomatoes on the top of the enchilada, adding some lettuce if you want.

Good Friends

In my first paragraph for our new blog I wold like to talk about friends. When you are in a different country you meet lots of people but only a few are later considered friends, because not everyone can have the honor to be called that way. I think that friendship is a very important in anybody's life, because someone in which you can trust, someone to share good and not so good experiences and you need someone to hold your hand and walk beside you. In my opinion that's what friendship its all about. it doesn't matter if you are 1000000 kilometer away; what really matters even through the distance you can feel your real friend close to you and that you could be sure that that person will be always there for you like you will always be there for him.

BE ARTIST IN THE SUBWAY

Montreal is the biggest bilingual city in the world, English and French are the official languages; Montreal is world furrow also because offers many cultural options all year round like museums, festivals, carnival, etc… You can see culture all over the city, in the streets, the buildings, the churches and in the subway…. Yes, in the subway!!! In the Montreal´s subway you can appreciate amazing artists; they are very professional and have the capacity to change your mood.

Making a blog for ESL

The picture to the left is a mind map my class prepared to think about how they would create a class blog. They thought of themes, such as recipes, sports, economics and multiculturalism. By sketching freely they also began to explore the graphic qualities of a blog. Their first assignment was to choose an image, and write a paragraph about it. To put actions to words, and to help model what I want them to do, I have prepared this email as an example."-Adam

The picture above is the first challenge in the creation of our class blog. Drawing the picture was the way we found to discuss what we want to write about. And there are very different interests: sports, politics, economy, culture and music. I think it's normal, because we have so many different people in class. But the question I make now is: Will we be able to write about so many different things and make Adam be proud of us???? I hope so." -Fabiano
